Masters of the Universe is shaping up to be one star-studded affair, and another A-list star just joined the gang. Idris Elba is the latest actor to board this high-profile project, which hails from Mattel and Amazon MGM Studios.
Mattel launched the Masters of the Universe line of action figures in 1982, and its success later inspired several animated series, films, video games, and more. Following the success of Barbie, it was just a matter of time before one of Mattel’s properties got the Hollywood treatment, and their live-action Masters of the Universe is showing the most promise so far.
This adaptation hails from director Travis Knight and writer Chris Butler, with Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Robbie Brenner, and Steve Tisch serving as producers. Nicholas Galitzine will lead its cast as He-Man, and he’ll be joined by Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn and Camila Mendes as Teela.
Idris Elba is the latest major star to board this project in the role of Duncan, Man-At-Arms, who’s been serving as weapons master and combat instructor to the royal family for centuries. He most recently voiced Knuckles in the Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off series Knuckles and will soon return in the third film in this animated franchise. He’ll next be seen in the action comedy Heads of State and the survival thriller Above the Below, which he co-directed.
