Daveigh Chase, best known for voicing Lilo in Lilo & Stitch and for her role in The Ring, left behind an estate valued at $400,000, according to probate documents obtained by Us Weekly. The filing comes after reports that the former child star had been living on the streets in Los Angeles before her death at age 35.
On Wednesday, July 8, Chase’s mother, Cathy Chase, asked a Los Angeles Superior Court to name her as administrator of the estate. In the documents, she said her daughter left $400,000 in personal property and no real estate. Cathy noted that Daveigh was never married and had no children, which is why she was seeking to handle the estate. The filing also identified Daveigh’s father, John Schwallier, as a possible estate descendant.
Court filing outlines limits on estate spending
Us Weekly also obtained a second motion filed with the court that placed restrictions on how the estate’s money can be used. The instructions say funds should not be spent without court approval or legal guidance, and that the administrator may only reimburse official court costs and bond premiums. The document also says fees to the administrator or an attorney cannot be paid without prior court approval, and that failure to follow the rules could lead to removal or repayment obligations.
A probate hearing is scheduled for August 12 at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, and Cathy has asked the court to approve a $400,000 bond before then. Chase’s death was first confirmed by her boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, who said she had been dealing with meningitis and a blood infection before she died. A Los Angeles medical examiner later listed acquired immunodeficiency syndrome as the primary cause of death, ruling it natural and noting chronic polysubstance use as a contributing factor.
Chase had largely disappeared from the public eye in the mid-2010s, and fans in recent years had sometimes shared footage of her on Skid Row in Los Angeles. A source previously told Us that people around her had tried to help over the years, while childhood friend Amy Castle said the outcome could have been different if Chase had been willing to open up to others.
