5 beginner cycling lessons one new rider learned after 30 days on the bike

As cycling gains momentum online, with millions of mentions on TikTok, more beginners are giving the sport a try. According to the report, content creator Riley Rehl set out to document her own start-from-scratch experience and managed to work up to a 20-mile ride in just 30 days. Along the way, she picked up a handful of lessons that made the process feel more manageable.

What a first month of cycling can teach a beginner

One of the biggest takeaways was that confidence can come faster than expected. Riley said she had not owned a bike since childhood and had never ridden on roads, so she began with an off-road ride to get comfortable first. That extra practice helped her feel more prepared when it was time to cycle in traffic, and she said the experience left her proud, energized, and happy to have gotten a workout outdoors.

Preparation also played a major role. She had researched road rules and cycling etiquette in advance, which helped her feel more at ease sharing the road. She also observed experienced riders at traffic lights to learn from how they handled themselves. On top of that, she found that proper gear mattered more than she expected. Running shoes made pedaling awkward, while cycling shoes and cleats improved power and speed, even though clipping in took practice and led to a few early falls. She practiced in an empty parking lot and later noted that her shoes felt too tight, with numbness in her toes.

Riley also learned that understanding the bike itself is important. After falling a few times on her 20-mile ride, she realized her bike had an extra brake she had not known about. She said she had struggled on a hill early in the ride and assumed she was doing something wrong, which turned out to be true in part because she had not fully learned how the bike worked. In the end, she said the challenge gave her motivation to keep cycling beyond the 30-day experiment and made her excited to continue.
