Apple TV has taken a familiar revenge story and shaped it into a new 10-episode series that is drawing attention as one of the summer’s biggest TV releases. Based on John D. MacDonald’s novel The Executioners, the Cape Fear story has appeared in several earlier forms, including the 1962 film, Martin Scorsese’s 1991 version, and even a Simpsons parody. This latest adaptation shifts the material into a modern thriller format.
In the series, Javier Bardem plays Max Cady, the convict whose return from prison sets the plot in motion. The Bowden role is divided between Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson, with Adams playing Anna Bowden, Max’s former defense attorney, and Wilson playing Tom Bowden, the prosecutor in Max’s case and Anna’s husband. According to the report, that change gives the story a different dynamic, especially as Max reenters their lives after his exoneration and becomes a public figure.
The series comes from creator Nick Antosca, and its cast is described as fully committed to the material. The report also notes that the project has the backing of Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese as executive producers. A strong score from Jeff Russo helps set the tone for a tense, dramatic revenge story that leans into twists and shock value rather than a straight legal thriller.
For viewers tracking the rollout, the next episode is set for Friday, July 17, with an early release expected the night before on Thursday, July 16. Cape Fear will run for 10 episodes total, with three episodes still left after the latest installment. Episodes 1 through 7 are already streaming, while episode 8 arrives on July 17, episode 9 on July 24, and the final episode on July 31.
