In a thrilling matchup on February 8, 2025, the Los Angeles Lakers secured a 124-117 victory over the Indiana Pacers at Crypto.com Arena. The Lakers were without superstars LeBron James and Luka Dončić, both sidelined due to injuries. Stepping into the spotlight, guard Austin Reaves delivered a career-high performance, scoring 45 points.

Impressive Performance

Reaves’ impressive shooting included 14 of 26 from the field, four three-pointers, and a perfect 13 of 13 from the free-throw line. Through his performance, Reaves joined an elite group of Los Angeles Lakers players by becoming the sixth in franchise history to record at least 45 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in a single game. The first five to achieve this feat were Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James.

Reaves accomplished this milestone while leading the short-handed Lakers to a 124-117 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday. Aware of the significance of his achievement, Reaves acknowledged the unusual nature of seeing his name among such legends. “It looks weird when you see my name up there,” Reaves said with a smile, as reported by Yahoo! Sports.

Redick’s Praise

Lakers coach JJ Redick emphasized Reaves’ impact on the team’s success, stating, “I think he’s been as important as any player on our team.” Reflecting on Reaves’ performance, Redick added, “I felt like he was the best player on the floor tonight, and that says a lot. He showed up in a big-time way,” as reported by The Associated Press.

Forward Rui Hachimura also made a significant contribution, scoring 24 points and grabbing nine rebounds on his 27th birthday. Guard Gabe Vincent added 12 points, while newcomer Jordan Goodwin chipped in 10 points in his Lakers debut. The victory marked the Lakers’ fifth consecutive win, highlighting the team’s depth and resilience.

Commanding Lead

The Lakers established a commanding 25-point lead in the first half. Despite a strong third-quarter effort by the Pacers, who narrowed the gap, the Lakers maintained their composure. Key plays in the final quarter, including a decisive dunk by Hachimura, ensured the Lakers’ lead remained intact.

For the Pacers, forward Pascal Siakam led with 23 points, guard Tyrese Haliburton contributed 19 points, and guard Bennedict Mathurin added 16 points. Despite their efforts, the Pacers couldn’t overcome the early deficit.

According to ESPN, LeBron James was ruled out due to left ankle soreness, an issue that had been troubling him in recent games. Luka Dončić, recently acquired by the Lakers, remained sidelined with a calf injury but is expected to make his debut soon.

The Lakers’ recent success, even without their star players, has been a testament to their depth and adaptability. As they look ahead, the anticipated return of James and the debut of Dončić are expected to further bolster the team’s performance.

The Lakers will next face the Utah Jazz on Monday, February 10, 2025, at home, while the Pacers are set to host the New York Knicks on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
