The Boston Celtics secured a crucial 112-105 victory over the first-place Cleveland Cavaliers at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on Tuesday night. In a highly anticipated Eastern Conference matchup, Boston’s bench played a key role in the win, helping the Celtics improve to a 36-13 record while gaining a 2-1 advantage in the season series against Cleveland, as reported by Reuters.
Slow Start
According to the Celtics Blog, the game began with a sluggish offensive start for both teams. Boston missed eight of its first nine shots, with Jaylen Brown providing the team’s only offense early, scoring seven straight points. Meanwhile, Cleveland struggled from the field, opening the game with a 2-for-17 shooting performance. Kristaps Porzingis provided early rim protection for Boston with two blocks, helping the Celtics establish a defensive presence.
Despite the slow start, Brown led all scorers with 12 first-quarter points. Payton Pritchard and Al Horford also made key contributions off the bench, with Horford tallying eight points in just six and a half minutes. Boston finished the quarter with a 29-15 lead, capitalizing on Cleveland’s shooting woes.
Boston’s rebounding dominance continued into the second quarter, generating multiple second-chance opportunities. The Celtics grabbed 13 offensive rebounds in the first half alone, helping them build a 40-23 lead. Jayson Tatum and Sam Hauser hit timely three-pointers, further extending the advantage.
Finding Their Rhythm
Cleveland finally found some offensive rhythm late in the second quarter behind Sam Merrill’s three-point shooting. Donovan Mitchell, who had a quiet first half, started to get into a groove. However, Boston’s defense held firm and the Celtics went into halftime with a 54-44 lead. Brown led all scorers with 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting.
Porzingis came out strong in the third quarter, scoring five quick points and assisting Jayson Tatum in transition. Boston maintained a double-digit lead for much of the period, but foul trouble began to pile up. Brown picked up his fourth foul on an offensive charge and was assessed a technical foul while heading to the bench.
Cleveland capitalized on Brown’s absence, cutting the deficit to six points as the home crowd energized the Cavaliers. Jarrett Allen proved to be a force inside, recording 16 rebounds and 14 points. Darius Garland also became a problem for Boston’s defense, scoring 17 points by the end of the third quarter.
Despite Cleveland’s push, Boston responded with key plays. Porzingis threw down a powerful dunk, Horford nailed a corner three, and Tatum finished a fast-break dunk following a steal by Pritchard. The Celtics entered the fourth quarter leading 87-75.
Derrick White came up big in the final period, opening with a three-pointer and later pressuring Mitchell into a backcourt violation, as noted by NBC Sports Boston. White then connected on another deep three to put Boston up 95-83. A blown defensive coverage by Cleveland allowed Porzingis to walk in for an uncontested dunk, further swinging momentum in Boston’s favor.
However, the Cavaliers refused to go away. Cleveland went on a 12-2 run, cutting Boston’s lead to just five points with six minutes remaining. Brown was called for his fifth foul, sending Mitchell to the free-throw line, where he reduced the deficit to four. As tensions rose, Max Strus committed three quick fouls, slowing down the game.
White remained composed under pressure, scoring 14 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter and knocking down four three-pointers. His clutch shooting restored Boston’s double-digit lead and kept Cleveland at bay.
A late foul by Pritchard on Garland allowed the Cavaliers to cut the lead to five points with 20 seconds left. However, the Celtics sealed the win at the free-throw line, securing a tough road victory against one of the conference’s top teams.
According to CBS Sports, Derrick White’s resurgence has played a key role in the Celtics’ recent turnaround. Last season, his leap from a solid role player to a near All-Star helped Boston secure a championship, and his strong start this season contributed to the team’s 16-3 record. However, a recent slump—partly due to injury and illness—coincided with the Celtics’ 9-8 stretch, where he struggled with efficiency.
Now back in form, White has been instrumental in Boston’s four-game winning streak, averaging 18.8 points and 4.8 assists on strong shooting percentages. The Celtics thrive when he plays well, boasting a 19-3 record when he shoots 50% or better. With his return to top form, Boston’s offense is once again firing on all cylinders.
With the win, the Celtics moved within striking distance of Cleveland in the Eastern Conference standings. Boston now turns its attention to another marquee matchup as they host the new-look Dallas Mavericks on Thursday at TD Garden. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers will look to bounce back when they face the Indiana Pacers on Friday.
