Madonna is back at the top of the album charts. Her new release, Confessions II, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, giving the pop icon her first chart-topping album of the decade and extending a record that now spans four different decades.
According to Billboard, the album opened with 134,000 equivalent album units in its first week. The achievement brings Madonna to 10 No. 1 albums overall, beginning with Like a Virgin in 1984. She is now the only artist with at least one No. 1 album in the 1980s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s, since her 1990s albums Erotica, Bedtime Stories, and Ray of Light all fell short of the top spot.
A milestone few artists have reached
The new No. 1 also places Madonna in a very small club. Billboard reports that she is only the fourth artist to reach 10 No. 1s on both the Billboard 200 and the Hot 100, joining the Beatles, Taylor Swift, and Drake. Her last album to reach No. 1 was 2019’s Madame X, while 2012’s MDNA also reached the summit and 2015’s Rebel Heart peaked at No. 2.
The chart success is only part of the story for Confessions II. Rolling Stone described the album as Madonna’s best in 20 years, praising its nonstop dance-floor flow and the way it draws from the history of club music while turning those influences into something personal.
