Na Hong-jin’s science-fiction thriller Hope continued to lead the South Korean box office over the July 24–26 weekend, holding onto the No. 1 spot as the market slowed. According to KOBIS, the tracking service run by the Korean Film Council, the film earned $5.5 million from 767,366 admissions in the three-day period, giving it a dominant 66.8% share of total weekend revenue.
The film, which stars Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon, Michael Fassbender, and Alicia Vikander, centers on a fight for survival in an isolated harbor town after residents encounter a mysterious alien presence nearby. After its record-breaking opening, the title has now reached $25.3 million in total revenue and 3,415,707 admissions in South Korea.
Other titles in the top 10
Behind Hope, Minions & Monsters finished second with $793,103, while Disney’s live-action Moana placed third in its third weekend with $593,187. Toy Story 5 came in fourth and is now close to the $20 million mark locally, with a cumulative $19.8 million. Faith-based animated feature David ranked fifth, and Korean thriller The Eyes took sixth.
Japanese anime feature Dream Animals The Movie opened in seventh place, followed by Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme in eighth. Showbox’s action-horror hit Colony placed ninth, while horror title Hokum rounded out the top 10. Overall, the weekend box office totaled $8.2 million, down sharply from $17.1 million the previous week.
