MGM+ is widening the world of Robin Hood for its second season, and the historical series is bringing in three familiar genre and period-drama faces to help do it. According to the report, Colin O’Donoghue, James Purefoy, and Luke Roberts have joined the cast as the show prepares to move beyond Nottingham and into the political centers of England and continental Europe.
The new season is expected to push the story into courtly intrigue, with the action no longer limited to the forest and the Merry Men’s usual territory. That broader setting will reportedly open the door to power struggles that could unsettle Robin and his allies as the series leans further into royal maneuvering.
New roles bring more political tension
Deadline reports that O’Donoghue, known for Once Upon a Time, will play John, the son of Henry II. The character is described as power-hungry and cowardly, traits that will likely be familiar to viewers who know earlier versions of the Robin Hood legend. Purefoy, who recently portrayed the king of Eternia in Masters of the Universe, is set as Henry II, King of England, a ruler with major ambitions for his kingdom.
Roberts, who appeared in The Batman, will play Amaury D’Montfort, an ambitious nobleman hoping to win favor with the royals. The additions suggest season 2 will place as much emphasis on court politics as on outlaw adventure, with the series continuing its modern take on the classic myth while expanding its scope. The first season found an audience and drew positive attention, helping set up the show’s return with a larger royal canvas for the next chapter.
