Netflix is revisiting Little House on the Prairie, but the new series is not a direct copy of the 1970s NBC adaptation. The story still follows the Ingalls family, based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books, yet the streaming version shifts several major details as it builds its own path. The series is set to debut in July 2026, and Netflix has already renewed it for a second season ahead of the premiere.
One of the biggest differences is the cast of characters. Carrie Ingalls does not appear from the start, even though she eventually joined the family in the original show. Nellie Oleson is also absent in season 1, with the report noting that viewers may not see her until season 2. The new version also changes the family’s location: instead of beginning in Plum Creek near Walnut Grove, Minnesota, the Ingalls start out in Wisconsin and later move near Independence, Kansas, in the 1870s.
That move becomes part of the first season’s arc, as the family deals with debt and decides to head to Plum Creek by the end of the season, bringing the story back toward the book series’ original setting. Another noticeable shift involves religion. The classic TV version placed more emphasis on church and the family’s connection to God, while Netflix’s adaptation mentions faith but does not focus on it as heavily, aligning more closely with the books. The new series also broadens the perspective by centering season 1 around an Osage family, a storyline that was not a major part of either the books or the earlier show.
The cast of the Netflix series includes Alice Halsey, Luke Bracey, Crosby Fitzgerald, and Skywalker Hughes, with Jocko Sims, Warren Christie, Wren Zhawenim Gotts, Meegwun Fairbrother, and Alyssa Wapanatâhk among the supporting names. The original NBC series, which premiered in 1974, starred Michael Landon, Karen Grassle, Melissa Gilbert, and Melissa Sue Anderson, and it also helped launch the careers of Jason Bateman and Kyle Richards. After Landon left during the final season, the title changed to Little House: A New Beginning, and three films followed after the series ended its run.
