Star Wars spin-offs often arrive under intense scrutiny, and according to the report, that pressure has only grown as recent entries have been compared against the franchise’s highest highs and lowest lows. But Star Wars: Visions has already carved out a special place within the galaxy far, far away by letting top animation studios tell stories that could sit inside or outside canon. Two shorts from Production I.G. stood out enough to inspire a full spin-off, and The Ninth Jedi is said to not only honor that legacy, but push it further.

The series follows Lah Kara, a young Jedi padawan searching for her father, Lah Zima, while a dangerous warlord named Nawaam launches a campaign to take over planets across the system. Kara’s personal mission is quickly complicated by the larger conflict around her, forcing her to balance family, loyalty, and survival as the threat grows. The report notes that the story leans into new characters and ideas rather than simply relying on familiar Star Wars beats, especially as it moves into its later episodes.

A fantasy-forward take with standout visuals

One of the strongest points of The Ninth Jedi, according to the review, is its animation. The hand-drawn style is described as exceptional, with the series standing alongside some of the biggest names in modern anime. While it still includes the expected Star Wars elements such as lightsabers and starships, those details are used more as support than as the main attraction. Instead, the show places greater emphasis on original worldbuilding, including fantasy-inspired settings and a planet populated by elven- and dwarf-like creatures.

The report also highlights the way The Ninth Jedi expands on the idea of lightsaber colors, a concept introduced in an earlier Visions installment. That mythology continues in more layered and meaningful ways here, especially as the story digs into character psychology and moral choices. While the series reportedly stumbles a little when it echoes familiar franchise formulas, its most original ideas are the ones that leave the biggest impression. Overall, the piece positions The Ninth Jedi as one of the most impressive Star Wars stories in recent memory, and a strong example of what Visions can do when it is allowed to take creative risks.

Netflix’s ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ Heads Toward a Tragic Finish in Part 2 https://magicmoments.com/netflixs-one-hundred-years-of-solitude-heads-toward-a-tragic-finish-in-part-2/ Wed, 05 Aug 2026 08:28:15 +0000 https://magicmoments.com/netflixs-one-hundred-years-of-solitude-heads-toward-a-tragic-finish-in-part-2/ The second half of Netflix’s adaptation continues the Buendía family saga as Macondo’s growth, conflict, and long-building curse move closer to their inevitable end.

Netflix’s adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude made a striking impression when its first eight episodes arrived in 2024, pairing lavish visuals with an unflinching approach to the novel’s more fantastical and difficult ideas. The story follows Macondo, a place that begins as a small village and expands into a thriving town while remaining tied to the curse that shadows its founders, José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula Iguarán. Across generations, the Buendía family becomes inseparable from the town’s rise and decline, with war, revolution, and outside influence steadily pushing Macondo toward ruin.

According to the review, Part 1 focused on the promise of Macondo’s founding, while the first seven episodes of Part 2, directed by Laura Mora and Carlos Moreno, make the family’s fate feel unavoidable. Even as the town benefits from major inventions and signs of progress, the series keeps emphasizing how isolated Macondo has become from the rest of the world. That distance has preserved a kind of fragile ideal, but it also means every new arrival carries the potential to disrupt the Buendías’ solitude as the story moves toward its final collapse.

The Buendías Face the Consequences of Their Own History

In the aftermath of Part 1, the family is divided from within. Colonel Aureliano Buendía’s campaign to free Macondo from the Conservative Party clashes with Úrsula’s wish to keep the peace. Once a quiet artist, Aureliano has become a hardened revolutionary, but the report notes that he remains trapped in the violence of war even after its purpose has faded. During this period, he fathers 17 sons with 17 different women, and those mothers come to Úrsula seeking acknowledgment for their children, though none can be formally recognized as heirs.

The next generation also plays a major role in shaping Macondo’s future. Aureliano and José Arcadio Segundo, sons of Arcadio and Santa Sofía de la Piedad, are difficult to distinguish at first, yet their paths affect the town in very different ways. José Arcadio becomes an inventor whose work helps open Macondo to outsiders and leads to the arrival of a banana company, bringing both economic change and devastating consequences. Aureliano, meanwhile, is portrayed as impulsive and pleasure-seeking, and his relationship with Petra Cotes has an unexpected effect on the local livestock. When he later marries the deeply religious Fernanda del Carpio while continuing his affair with Petra, the resulting tension spreads through the family and destabilizes several of his children. The years that follow are marked by love, grief, loss, and repeated reminders of how fleeting life can be.

The post Netflix Moves Quickly on Next Harlan Coben Series After ‘I Will Find You’ Breakout appeared first on .

]]>
Netflix is wasting no time building on the momentum of Harlan Coben’s latest streaming hit. After I Will Find You became a major success for the platform, the company has quickly moved ahead with another adaptation from the bestselling author’s library.

The new project, currently titled Myron Bolitar and still possibly a working title, is based on Coben’s long-running book series and begins with Drop Shot, the second novel in that franchise. The series centers on Myron Bolitar, a former basketball hopeful whose playing career ends because of an injury, forcing him to reinvent himself as a sports agent. In that role, he relies on his sharp instincts, charisma, and a hard-edged business partner while navigating the dangerous and ethically messy world of professional sports.

Cast expands as production gains speed

According to the report, the adaptation was only recently greenlit, but casting has already started to move fast. Colin Woodell is set to lead the ensemble, with KJ Apa and Diane Guerrero also attached. Several new names have now joined the project as well, including Chloe Fineman, who will take on her first major live-action scripted TV role after leaving Saturday Night Live following seven seasons.

Fineman will play Parker Quinn, a respected sports reporter known for her experience and commitment to the field. Jabari Banks has been cast as Dwayne Richmond, a rising tennis star and one of the key clients at MB Sports. Jamie McShane will appear as Ray Dimonte, a seasoned NYPD homicide detective, while Ben McKenzie is set to recur as Gavin Pierce, a powerful sports agent whose history with Myron has turned them into rivals.

The rapid expansion of the cast reflects how quickly Netflix is pushing the series forward after the strong response to I Will Find You. That earlier adaptation drew more than 1.8 billion minutes viewed, making it Netflix’s biggest streaming success of the year and, at the time of the report, the most-watched series in the world. With that kind of performance behind it, the streamer appears eager to keep Coben’s stories in its release pipeline.

The Fast & Furious franchise is moving toward its end on the big screen, but the road ahead is not completely closed. According to the report, the series will wrap its theatrical run with Fast Forever, the 11th and final movie, due on March 17, 2028. Vin Diesel is set to return, and Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson will also appear as Deckard Shaw and Luke Hobbs, following the success of their spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw.

Fast Forever is being directed by Louis Leterrier, with Christina Hodson and Michael Lesslie writing the script. While the film is expected to serve as a major farewell for the long-running action series, the franchise itself is not disappearing entirely. NBCUniversal announced in May that four television projects set in the Fast & Furious universe are in development, and Mike Daniels is attached to write the pilot for the first one.

In the meantime, viewers seem to be turning back to one of the franchise’s most celebrated entries. Fast Five, released in 2011 and directed by Justin Lin, is widely credited with reviving momentum for the series after a period of declining audience interest. The film earned nearly $650 million worldwide and was praised by critics for leaning into the franchise’s bigger, more chaotic style. At the moment, it is also performing well on streaming, ranking among the ten most-watched movies on Peacock in the U.S., with Reminders of Him leading the list.

For fans looking ahead to the final chapter, Fast Five offers a reminder of why the series became such a major blockbuster force in the first place. Its current streaming success suggests that interest in the franchise remains strong as it approaches its next big milestone.

Dick adaptation released in 2011, is currently streaming on Peacock in the U.S. but only for a limited time.

The post Matt Damon’s 2011 Sci-Fi Thriller Is Leaving Peacock Soon appeared first on .

Matt Damon is often associated with big sci-fi titles like The Martian and Interstellar, but one of his earlier genre outings is now nearing the end of its streaming run. The 2011 film is available in the United States on Peacock, though it will not remain there much longer, according to the report.

The movie also marked the first time Damon worked with Emily Blunt, years before the two appeared together again in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. It was directed by George Nolfi, who had previously worked on the writing teams for Damon-led projects including Ocean’s Twelve and The Bourne Ultimatum.

A Philip K. Dick adaptation with a high-concept premise

Based on a Philip K. Dick short story from 1954, the film follows two people who fall for each other only to discover that their relationship has put them on the wrong path. They are then pursued by a group of men in hats whose job is to keep everyone aligned with the life plan laid out for them.

The report describes the movie as something like a mix between a Black Mirror episode and Marvel’s Loki, with its own version of the idea of a force that polices reality and fate. For viewers looking for a mind-bending Damon sci-fi title before it disappears from Peacock, the clock is ticking.

It is another reminder that Damon’s filmography includes more than just the most obvious blockbusters. This one arrived in theaters in 2011 and paired him with Blunt in a story built around destiny, control, and the consequences of breaking away from the path that was supposed to be followed.

James Gray’s new crime drama Paper Tiger has been set as the opening night film of the 64th New York Film Festival, where it will make its North American premiere on Sept. 25. The movie stars Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller, and marks Gray’s first feature since Armageddon Time in 2022.

The selection continues Gray’s long relationship with the festival. It will be his fourth film to screen there, following The Immigrant and Armageddon Time as main selections, and The Lost City of Z, which played the festival’s closing night. According to the report, the opening-night slot has often gone to films that later become awards-season contenders, including several best picture nominees over the years.

A New York-set story with an awards-season backdrop

Paper Tiger was first shown at Cannes earlier this year, where it received a seven-minute standing ovation. In a review cited by the report, Variety’s Owen Gleiberman described the film as carrying “the dread-fueled engine of a neo-New Hollywood vérité thriller.” Set in 1986, the story centers on brothers Irwin and Gary Pearl. Irwin gets pulled into trouble with the Russian mob after trying a get-rich-quick plan to clean up the Gowanus Canal, while his former cop brother Gary is the one person who can help him.

New York Film Festival artistic director Dennis Lim said Gray has long been part of the festival and called the film a career-best achievement. Gray also said he was grateful to return with a project deeply tied to New York City and to share it with cast and crew members, many of whom are New Yorkers. Gray and members of the production will attend the opening-night screening, and more festival titles are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

MGM+ is widening the world of Robin Hood for its second season, and the historical series is bringing in three familiar genre and period-drama faces to help do it. According to the report, Colin O’Donoghue, James Purefoy, and Luke Roberts have joined the cast as the show prepares to move beyond Nottingham and into the political centers of England and continental Europe.

The new season is expected to push the story into courtly intrigue, with the action no longer limited to the forest and the Merry Men’s usual territory. That broader setting will reportedly open the door to power struggles that could unsettle Robin and his allies as the series leans further into royal maneuvering.

New roles bring more political tension

Deadline reports that O’Donoghue, known for Once Upon a Time, will play John, the son of Henry II. The character is described as power-hungry and cowardly, traits that will likely be familiar to viewers who know earlier versions of the Robin Hood legend. Purefoy, who recently portrayed the king of Eternia in Masters of the Universe, is set as Henry II, King of England, a ruler with major ambitions for his kingdom.

Roberts, who appeared in The Batman, will play Amaury D’Montfort, an ambitious nobleman hoping to win favor with the royals. The additions suggest season 2 will place as much emphasis on court politics as on outlaw adventure, with the series continuing its modern take on the classic myth while expanding its scope. The first season found an audience and drew positive attention, helping set up the show’s return with a larger royal canvas for the next chapter.

The years that follow are marked by love, grief, loss, and repeated reminders of how fleeting life can be.

Nicola Coughlan, Paapa Essiedu and a long list of other public figures are taking part in a charity auction designed to raise money for students in Gaza. The sale, organized by Phoenix Space, is set to open on July 27 and will run for 10 days on the Scholarships for Gaza auction website.

The auction includes contributions from more than 20 celebrities, among them Brian Cox, Gary Lineker, Paloma Faith, Maxine Peake, Juliet Stevenson, Charlotte Church, Harriet Walter, Vanessa Redgrave and Janet Suzman. Coughlan and her Derry Girls co-star Siobhán McSweeney have donated a signed behind-the-scenes photo, while Essiedu is offering his personal copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

In a statement, Essiedu said he could not imagine universities being destroyed and so much talent going unused, adding that he hoped the book could help open futures for students. Other items up for bidding include a signed Japan football shirt from Lineker, a production hoodie from Peake’s I Swear, the first poetry book Stevenson ever owned, a place in Church’s next wellness retreat, Walter’s personal script from Donmar Warehouse’s all-female Julius Caesar and a signed copy of her book, a necklace Redgrave wore in Long Day’s Journey Into Night, and a vintage Christian Lacroix brooch from Suzman.

According to Phoenix Space, hundreds of students in Gaza have already been offered places at U.K. universities but lack the funding to attend. This year, those offers include places at University College London, Imperial and Edinburgh, with students set to study subjects such as artificial intelligence and cognitive neuroscience.

Venice Days has announced a lineup shaped around female filmmakers and female-driven stories, with Hungarian director Lili Horvát’s first English-language feature, My Notes on Mars, chosen as the opening film. The independently run section, also known as Giornate degli Autori, will present 25 world premieres across its various strands, and 14 of those titles are directed by women, according to the report.

Starring Mackenzie Davis and Rupert Friend, My Notes on Mars follows an astrophysicist named Margot, whose marriage is under strain when she disappears during a hike with her husband, Sam. Weeks later, she reappears on the day of her own memorial service with no memory of her life, apart from her work on Mars research. Horvát previously brought Preparations to Be Together for an Unknown Period of Time to Venice and Toronto in 2020.

Competition titles and special events

The film is one of 10 competition entries that will be evaluated by an all-female jury led by Spanish filmmaker Carla Simón. The panel also includes Hania Mroue, founder and director of Beirut’s Metropolis Cinema, and Italian director-producer Sara Fgaier. Other competition titles include Agata the Writer by Kuba Dorabialski, with Mia Wasikowska; Balcanica by Nicola Sorcinelli, featuring and co-produced by Matilda De Angelis; Dear Ajayi by Damilola Orimogunje; and Robert Guèdiguian’s A Woman Today.

Shorts by Mona Fastvold and Claire Denis will also appear through the Miu Miu Women’s Tales series. Venice Days runs Sept. 2-12 alongside the main Venice Film Festival, and this edition is dedicated to the memory of its founder, critic Giorgio Gosetti.

Netflix Moves Quickly on Next Harlan Coben Series After ‘I Will Find You’ Breakout https://magicmoments.com/netflix-moves-quickly-on-next-harlan-coben-series-after-i-will-find-you-breakout/ Wed, 22 Jul 2026 10:04:07 +0000 https://magicmoments.com/netflix-moves-quickly-on-next-harlan-coben-series-after-i-will-find-you-breakout/ Following the huge success of ‘I Will Find You,’ Netflix has accelerated development on its next Harlan Coben adaptation, ‘Myron Bolitar.’

Matt Damon’s 2011 Sci-Fi Thriller Is Leaving Peacock Soon https://magicmoments.com/matt-damons-2011-sci-fi-thriller-is-leaving-peacock-soon/ Sun, 19 Jul 2026 09:24:06 +0000 https://magicmoments.com/matt-damons-2011-sci-fi-thriller-is-leaving-peacock-soon/ Matt Damon and Emily Blunt’s first film together, a Philip K. Dick adaptation released in 2011, is currently streaming on Peacock in the U.S. but only for a limited time.

‘Once Upon a Time’ Star Colin O’Donoghue Joins MGM+’s ‘Robin Hood’ Season 2 https://magicmoments.com/once-upon-a-time-star-colin-odonoghue-joins-mgms-robin-hood-season-2/ Thu, 16 Jul 2026 14:31:29 +0000 https://magicmoments.com/once-upon-a-time-star-colin-odonoghue-joins-mgms-robin-hood-season-2/ MGM+’s historical drama ‘Robin Hood’ is adding Colin O’Donoghue, James Purefoy, and Luke Roberts as the series expands into new royal power struggles in season 2.
